Step Into Your New Role

Kleinfelder is seeking an experienced Stormwater Senior Engineer / Project Manager in our New England Area (Boston, Worcester, & Springfield, MA, Rocky Hill, CT, Manchester, NH, or Portland & Augusta, ME offices) to deliver planning and design of stormwater management projects, including gray and green infrastructure best management practices (BMPs), hydrologic and hydraulic analyses, flood mitigation, NPDES permit compliance, and other climate and coastal resiliency projects. This position will lead the delivery of stormwater planning and resilient design tasks/projects for a wide array of clients.  The ideal candidate will thrive as a vital part of a resourceful and collaborative water team and climate resilience practice group for Kleinfelder’s East Division. Candidates are required to have significant engineering and design subject matter expertise with respect to gray and green infrastructure BMPs, stormwater management, stormwater quality treatment, NPDES compliance, and/or hydrologic/ hydraulic analyses. Experience in site design, entitlement permitting, and/or pursuit of grant opportunities is a plus.  Please note that this position is adaptable based on experience; applicants with a technical background and/or managerial background are equally encouraged to apply.

Remote working is an option, however, this role is intended to provide critical leadership and mentoring to our team of professionals, therefore opportunities for hybrid or in-office engagement are preferred. Our cross-disciplinary solutions depend upon robust engagement of practitioners across a variety of areas of expertise; it is this appreciation of big-picture vision in a context of practical project execution that allows us to arrive at “right solutions.” The role is intended to be interdisciplinary and assignments may be generated through any of our many practice areas, including Water, Transportation, Site, and Climate Change Resiliency.

Kleinfelder’s Water Team takes a collaborative approach to project delivery, business development, and operational success that includes opportunity for professional development and career growth. Based out of New England Area, the Water Team currently provides public and private sector clients with professional engineering services for stormwater, water, and wastewater infrastructure projects.  As part of the Team, you will have the opportunity to support a diverse range of water resources services which may include studies, planning, design, construction, and occasional project driven field work.

Kleinfelder’s Stormwater Group undertakes projects including green infrastructure, culvert assessment and design, hydrologic and hydraulic analysis, stormwater BMP assessment and retrofit, streetscaping, and stream restoration, as well as traditional civil engineering design elements generally associated with site development.

Responsibilities:

  • Serve as project manager, lead engineer, and/or lead stormwater technical liaison with client or internal project team on project efforts, including capital projects, new construction, retrofit, and flood mitigation projects for public and private sector entities.

  • Perform hydrologic/hydraulic analyses for the planning, design, and construction of stormwater management and resiliency projects

  • Lead stormwater feasibility planning and design efforts, including, but not limited to the design of culverts, pipe networks, green stormwater infrastructure, and other BMPs for water quality, peak rate mitigation, and flood reduction purposes.
    • Stormwater design responsibilities include preparing agency-required documentation such as SWMPs, Stormwater Management Reports, pollutant load calculations, SWPPPs, erosion control and/or stormwater management plans and permitting documents.
    • Perform design and oversee preparation of plans and details using AutoCAD/Civil-3D.
    • Development of specifications, technical report writing, quantities, cost estimating, and engineering support of construction.

  • Coordinate with professionals in Kleinfelder’s East Division Water Teams and Climate Resilience Practice Group, including waterfront and coastal hazard experts on projects related to sea level rise, storm surge, coastal erosion, and the use of flood hardening measures (e.g., seawall, bulkheads, revetments, deployable flood barriers) and coastal nature-based solutions (e.g., living shorelines, dune and wetland restoration)

  • Project Management responsibilities for this position include:
    • Development of proposals, including drafting of scopes and fees.
    • Effectively managing project/task schedules, resources, and budgets, including internal and external teams and subconsultants.
    • Drawing upon expertise from multiple disciplines, including planning, natural and social sciences, engineering, and architecture, to solve technical problems;
    • Maintaining regular and constructive communication with clients and project team members.
    • Coordinating efforts of assigned design team to ensure completeness and accuracy of design effort.
    • Mentoring junior staff in the proper planning and execution of project tasks.

  • Contribution to the visibility of Kleinfelder staff, clients, and projects through participation in professional organizations and external events.

Requirements:

  • 8+ years of professional experience in civil engineering experience with an emphasis in drainage and/or stormwater design.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of green infrastructure, stormwater management and/or climate change adaptation, and experience applying it.
  • Professional registration (see below on Certifications)
  • Experience leading tasks/projects.
  • Excellent written, visual, and oral communication skills.
  • Experience developing/reviewing proposals.
  • Dedication to client service, technical rigor, and high quality.
  • High emotional intelligence.

Education: Bachelor's degree in Civil Engineering or related field is required.  Master's degree is a plus.

Certifications:  Professional Engineering licensure (in any U.S. state) is required. P.E. licensure in a New England state (or ability to obtain reciprocity within 1 year) preferred.  Project Management Professional (PMP) or Certified Floodplain Manager (CFM) certification is a plus.
