Kleinfelder is currently seeking a Laboratory Manager to perform testing, and provide coordination, quality management, and oversight to its lab in Houston, Texas
  

The Laboratory Manager will manage all activities related to performance of laboratory testing in support of the Houston Geotechnical and Construction Materials Engineering and Testing Laboratory.   They will meet agreed upon project deadlines by performing testing; scheduling technicians and managing workload; They will confirm that technicians correctly perform testing, calibrations, and calculations and computations by implementing and maintaining the requirements of the Kleinfelder Quality Management System; and hire, train, coordinate and supervise assigned staff.  Works independently, using industry knowledge to solve problems of moderate scope.  The successful candidate will bring strong leadership and knowledge of commercial laboratory operations. 

Position responsibilities will include:

  1. Promote, sustain, and demonstrate Kleinfelder's values and safety commitment.
  2. Prudently manage resources and staff to ensure efficiency and quality. 
  3. Supervise operational personnel (laboratory staff), including resource coordination, internal quality control, and management of deliverables.
  4. Communicate with clients and coworkers to successfully and profitably deliver laboratory services on a consistent basis.
  5. Provide technical leadership and guidance for staff. 
  6. Represent Kleinfelder in local professional organizations. 
  7. Responsible for making sure project deadlines are met by providing proper scheduling, coordination, and organization of items to be tested and available resources.
  8. Responsible to perform routine to complex lab testing including soils, aggregates, concrete, asphalt, masonry, and steel materials.
  9. Responsible for performing the testing, documentation, computations, and quality review in accordance with Kleinfelder's Quality Management System Manual and applicable testing standards (e.g. ASTM, AASHTO, Caltrans, etc.).
  10. Ensures that laboratory equipment is properly maintained and calibrated in accordance with internal procedures.
  11. Maintenance of Kleinfelder's local lab accreditations. 
  12. Experienced in establishing and maintaining relationships through excellent communication, professionalism, and client service focus to both internal and external clients.
  13. Experience with AASHTO and A2L accreditation procedures for soil, aggregates, and concrete. The ACI Aggregate Base (soils and aggregates) and ACI strength.

 

Consideration for this position requires the following experience:

  1. 5+ years of experience with laboratory testing of construction materials. 
  2. Valid driver's license with a clean driving record and ability to pass drug
  3. High School Diploma or equivalent. 
  4. Ability to work independently and as a team member, maintaining composure, and working effectively in a high-pressure environment with changing priorities.
  5. Must have excellent interpersonal, verbal, and written communication skills. 
  6. Able to use a company provided laptop or tablet computer and a working knowledge of MS Office programs (e.g. Word, Excel, Outlook, etc.).
  7. Organization and multi-tasking ability. 
  8. A good work ethic, attention to detail, and high level of personal integrity. 
  9. Authorization to work in the United States. 

 In addition to the above required experience, hiring preference will be given to those with the following certifications or experience:

  1. Previous experience as a laboratory manager or supervisor. 
  2. Previous experience with Geotechnical testing, such as Resistance value, Direct Shear, Consolidations. ect..
  3. Associates degree or higher in construction technology, construction management, or related engineering field.
  4. Engineer-In-Training (EIT) or Fundamental of Engineering (FE) certification
  5. American Concrete Institute (ACI) certifications:
    • Aggregate Testing Technician - Level 1 or 2
    • Aggregate/Soils Base Testing Technician
    • Concrete Strength Testing Technician
    • Concrete Field-Testing Technician - Grade 1
    • Concrete Laboratory Testing Technician - Level 1 or 2
  1. National Institute for Certification in Engineering Technologies (NICET):
    1. Construction Materials Testing: Asphalt, Concrete, Soils (Levels I, II, or III)
  2. Caltrans
    1. JTCP Soils and Aggregate
    2. JTCP HMA I & II
  3. Additional Caltrans Certifications
  4. Nuclear density gauge safety, handling, operation, and transporting training/certification.
