Kleinfelder is seeking a qualified, responsible candidate for the position of Senior Geotechnical / Materials Engineer (P. Eng) to work on a project in the Edmonton, Alberta Canada metropolitan area. is responsible for overseeing and directing construction materials testing and inspection programs, providing engineering judgment, and accepting or rejecting work in accordance with contract documents and applicable standards.

 

This role serves as the Engineer of Record (EOR) representative or delegated authority and is accountable for:

  • Interpretation of geotechnical recommendations
  • Evaluation of field and laboratory test results
  • Final acceptance of subgrade, foundations, and materials systems

Key Responsibilities

  • Provide engineering oversight of construction materials testing (CMT) and inspection programs across:
    • Earthwork and subgrade preparation
    • Concrete placement and performance
    • Aggregate and structural support systems
  • Interpret and enforce compliance with:
    • CSA standards (CSA A23.1, A23.2, CSA S6, etc.)
    • Project specifications and contract requirements
    • Applicable Alberta regulations and municipal codes
  • Review, interpret, and accept/reject:
    • Compaction testing results
    • Concrete test data (strength, air, slump, etc.)
    • Subgrade and foundation conditions
  • Provide direction to field technicians and technologists (C.E.T., P.Tech.)
  • Identify and mitigate geotechnical and materials-related risks, including:
    • Moisture sensitivity
    • Settlement potential
    • Material variability and constructability challenges
  • Issue formal engineering recommendations, reports, and acceptance documentation
  • Support development and enforcement of project Quality Management Plans (QMP)
  • Participate in coordination with Owners, Contractors, and design teams

 

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS

  • Bachelor’s degree in Civil or Geotechnical Engineering
  • Licensed Professional Engineer (P.Eng.) in Alberta
  • Association of Professional Engineers and Geoscientists of Alberta
  • 8+ years of experience in geotechnical engineering, construction materials testing, or construction QA/QC
  • Demonstrated experience with construction-phase engineering oversight
  • Valid driver’s license and acceptable driving record

REQUIRED TECHNICAL COMPETENCIES

  • Strong understanding of:
  • Soil mechanics and compaction theory
  • Concrete behavior and performance
  • Construction sequencing and field execution constraints
  • Experience interpreting:
  • Proctor relationships (CSA equivalents to ASTM D698/D1557)
  • Density, moisture, and stiffness relationships
  • Field vs laboratory variability

REQUIRED / PREFERRED CERTIFICATIONS

  • Professional License:
  • Active P.Eng. (APEGA) – Required

Technical Certifications (Strongly Preferred):

  • Canadian Council of Independent Laboratories
  • Soils
  • Concrete
  • Aggregates
  • CSA / ACI Concrete Field Testing Certification (CSA A23.1 compliant)
  • Familiarity with nuclear density testing and applicable regulatory requirements

The ideal candidate for this role has:

  • Valid driver's license and clean driving record.
  • Use a company provided laptop or tablet computer and a working knowledge of MS Office programs (e.g., Word, Excel, Outlook, etc.).
  • High school diploma or equivalent.
  • A good work ethic and high level of personal integrity.
  • Ability to monitor contractors and report results verbally and in writing.
  • Proficiency in preparing clear and accurate detailed reports of testing and inspection activities and maintaining work activity records.
  • Attention to detail, quality, and safety

This position requires the ability to:

  • Bend, stoop, and lift up to 50 pounds (22.68 kg) repetitively and over 50 pounds (22.68 kg) using handling equipment (hand truck, etc.).
  • Operate equipment as necessary (i.e., ultrasonic nondestructive testing machine, concrete cylinder press, etc.).
  • Maintain safe mobility over construction obstacles by foot and ladder, traversing over rough broken ground and steep surfaces.
  • Work outside in variable weather at field sites and in labs with various levels of safety protection required.
