This position requires the ability to:
- Bend, stoop, and lift up to 50 pounds (22.68 kg) repetitively and over 50 pounds (22.68 kg) using handling equipment (hand truck, etc.).
- Operate heavy equipment as necessary (i.e., ultrasonic non-destructive testing machine, concrete cylinder press, etc.).
- Maintain safe mobility over construction obstacles by foot and ladder, traversing over rough broken ground and steep surfaces.
- Work outside in variable weather at field sites and in labs with various levels of safety protection required.
Responsibilities include but are not limited to:
- Perform Field Observations and Materials Sampling/Testing during Construction of Buildings, Bridges and Roadways.
- Perform testing on construction materials including, Soils, Reinforcing Steel, Concrete, Masonry, Structural Steel, Fireproofing, Metal Decking, Roofing and Paving.
- Write Daily Field Reports documenting work performed by the various contractors and indicating compliance/non-compliance with contract documents.
- Cast Field Samples of Concrete, Masonry, Grout, etc. for strength verification.
- Provide Daily Phone Calls to Department Manager to inform of Daily progress of the project.
- Pick-up construction material samples and deliver to laboratory, deliver equipment to site technicians.
While much of the work is local to the Raleigh-Metro Area, some travel may be required.
In addition to the above required certifications, hiring preference will be given to those with any of the following desired certifications:
- NCDOT testing/inspection certifications
- ICC Special Inspector Certifications (Pre-stressed Concrete, Soil, Spray-applied Fireproofing, Structural Masonry, Structural Welding, Structural Steel and Bolting)

- Experience inspecting rammed aggregate piers
Requirements:
- High School Diploma is required.

- 40-hour OSHA HAZWOPER certification a plus

Working as part of a team, the successful candidate will assist with ecological field assessments for projects in the mining, energy, and commercial development industries. Primary tasks will include protected species surveys, vegetative monitoring, and support with other ecological assessments and environmental permitting. The ideal candidate should have a strong knowledge of the natural resources of Florida.
Candidate should also possess strong time management, problem solving, communication, organizational skills, and have relevant computer/software experience. Candidate will be required to go through and obtain an MSHA New Miner Training certificate as part of on-the-job training.

The ability to travel, both within Florida and nationwide, and a clear driving record are also required. Potential candidates should be able to work effectively in both team environments and with limited supervision. Candidates should have availability to work outside of typical business hours. Flexibility in daily work schedule and willingness to work long hours in adverse environmental conditions and in remote areas is required.
Qualifications:
A bachelor's degree in the natural resources (i.e. biological, zoology, botany, ecology or environmental science) and a minimum of 2 years of experience as a natural resources professional is required. This position will be for weekend and holiday monitoring of small water treatment systems. All needed equipment and training provided. The person filling this role will be required to report remotely to the Dover, DE office at least once per month to attend mandatory virtual safety/staff meetings. Responsibilities:
Under the direction of a Utility Locate Supervisor, the person filling this role will perform work that involves visual inspection of predefined construction areas as well as reading and interpretation of utility maps to determine the presence of underground utilities, while using special electronic equipment to detect and locate said utilities. The utilities may include (but not be limited to) gas, electric, cable TV, telecommunications, sanitary sewer, water lines, street lighting and other facilities within the predefined construction area.
- Use iPad or other devices to receive, document and close out excavation notices
- Read and interpret utility maps / prints to identify the type and size of underground utilities
- Use assigned communication equipment to effectively communicate with excavators, utility reps, and company personnel, regarding underground facilities
- Operate different electronic detection equipment, to locate and mark under-ground facilities within prescribed accuracy limits

Practice Leader Responsibilities:
Business Development (35% of non-billable effort)
- Engage and proactively support CAMs and Area/Market Leads in winning more work (and more interesting/challenging work) for the Practice and the Division, through cross selling services to existing clients not yet being serviced by the Practice, and by attending, participating, or leading internal/external client BD meetings.
- Maintain an up-to-date list of Practice staff that can participate in proposal efforts and/or have their resume included in RFQs/SOQs/RFPs (e.g., strongest/most experienced staff).
- Proactively identify needs/gaps and advocate that AMs hire Practice staff to be part of pursuit teams to win identified opportunities and execute projects throughout the Division.
- Create and/or update crisp, clear, concise, and informative marketing materials (e.g., front-back or trifold “leave behinds”) to educate PMs/CAMs and inform clients of Kleinfelder’s Practice capabilities including:
- Generic materials (all markets and geographies)

- Hold biweekly resource calls with key Practice leaders in each Area/Office in the Division to steward resource sharing/leveraging across the Division.
- Conduct ITRs, QRs, MSDs, etc., focusing on the highest risk projects, to ensure:
- The appropriate technical resources are applied to our projects, including balancing staff leverage and staff development with the use of the appropriate subject matter experts and senior technical resources,
- The Practice is utilizing the appropriate technical solutions based on project risk and exposure to Kleinfelder and our clients, and
- Kleinfelder, Client, and Industry accepted Standard of Care quality standards are met.
- Work with KTN and the CoPs applicable to the Practice to develop, update, and maintain processes and procedures, standards, and specifications, etc. applicable to the Practice.
- Lead or actively participate in high-impact technical quality/delivery Loss Investigations within the Practice and ensure lessons learned are disseminated across the Division to Practice Team Members
Staff Development (20% of non-billable effort)
- Identify and foster delivery of necessary training (both internal and external) to ensure Practice staff across the Division consistently employ policies, procedures, and methods to plan and execute safe, compliant, high-quality work.
- Where applicable, encourage practitioners to obtain professional licensures and monitor KNET to ensure appropriate professional licensures are current and available to support growth strategies
- Identify and develop next-level Practice leadership and/or recruit Key staff for High-profile projects.

- Lead or have a major role in one or more external Practice related committees or professional organizations and present, at least annually, at a regional or national technical conference to:

- Preferred certifications: ACI concrete certified, NETTCP paving certified, PCI certified and NACE level certification

- Must have portable computer for field use and device capable of taking pictures (smart phone or digital camera)
- Five plus (5+) years of proven managerial experience with a focus on construction policies and practices.

- Experience with daily reporting to include electronic software such as Appia or Field manager software; must be able to submit in PDF format via e-mail, Excel version of Daily Report with daily photos contained in the report by completion of workday.

- Five plus (5+) years of proven managerial experience with a focus on construction policies and practices.

We are seeking a Climate Resiliency Engineer / Designer to join our growing engineering, architecture, and planning group in Massachusetts and Connecticut. The ideal candidate will thrive as a vital part of a resourceful and collaborative water/climate resilience team. They will have a commitment to quality, innovation, and excellence, while appreciating the growth opportunities and investment we make in our people.
Our climate resiliency team has been an industry leader in New England over the past decade in vulnerability assessment and climate adaptation planning. This position will help lead, inspire, and support our growing climate resilience practice across multiple geographies, but primarily based in Southern New England. Our resilience planning practice is a highly integrated group of professionals performing policy analysis, technical assessment, planning, design and construction and community outreach and engagement. Related areas of technical focus for this position include but are not limited to: climate adaptation and resiliency, vulnerability and risk assessment, hazard mitigation, social vulnerability and equity, and community resilience planning and engagement.
Candidates may choose to sit in our Boston, Westborough, or Springfield, Massachusetts or Rocky Hill, Connecticut Offices. Remote working is an option, however, this role is also intended to provide critical leadership and mentoring to our team of professionals, and opportunities for in-office engagement are preferred. Our Water Team (including our climate resilience practice) includes over 60 local engineers, planners and scientists as well a larger national community of practice. Our team takes a collaborative approach to project delivery, business development, and operational success that includes opportunity for professional development and career growth. Our cross-disciplinary solutions depend upon robust engagement of practitioners across a variety of areas of expertise; it is this appreciation of big-picture vision in a context of practical project execution that allows us to arrive at 'right solutions.' The role is intended to be interdisciplinary and assignments may be generated through any of our many practice areas.
Role
The desired candidate's primary day-to-day role will assist Kleinfelder's technical planning and design staff with the implementation of adaptation and resiliency strategies for climate-related hazards, including (but not limited to): coastal and inland flooding, sea level rise and storm surge, and extreme heat. Such strategies include (among others): deployable and permanent flood barriers (e.g., sea walls, bulkheads, berms), structure floodproofing, urban infrastructure retrofits, stormwater control measures/best management practices, green infrastructure, living shorelines, and other nature-based solutions.
Desired Qualifications & Skills
This position requires a candidate with strong technical expertise, design-oriented background, and excellent organizational, communication and technical writing skills. Candidates with a Professional Engineer (PE), EI/EIT, or RLA/RA certification are strongly preferred, and the ideal candidate will be fully capable of providing technical leadership and direction to project teams and mentoring of staff.
Specifically, it is required that this Climate Resiliency Engineer / Designer candidate will:
- Possess a Bachelor's degree (or higher) in civil or environmental engineering, coastal or structural engineering, architecture, landscape architecture, and/or urban design and climate resilience;
- Work diligently and effectively within a team environment, collaborating with staff from different disciplines and technical backgrounds;
- Have prior experience working on flood mitigation design projects, including projects incorporating Base and Design Flood Elevations that factor future sea level rise and storm surge impacts;
- Have experience with the following technical programs: AutoCAD/Civil 3D, GIS (ESRI ArcPro or ArcMap), and Microsoft Suite.
Additionally, a candidate with one - or a combination of - the following skillsets and/or prior experience is strongly preferred:
- Experience utilizing hydrologic and hydraulic modeling programs, including PCSWMM or EPA SWMM, HydroCAD, HEC-HMS, and/or HEC-RAS;
- Experience designing coastal/marine structures, determining and incorporating static and dynamic flood and wave loadings;
- Experience with one or more of the following is a plus: hazard mitigation planning, FEMA NFIP Community Rating System, and emergency operations planning;
- Have working knowledge or past experience with state-level climate adaptation and resiliency programs, or experience with relevant FEMA pre-disaster and flood mitigation programs (FEMA BRIC, HMA/FMA);
- Experience coordinating and leading community outreach and engagement activities;
- Past project or research experience with Affordable Housing projects, CDBG program, Historic/Cultural Resources or Community Preservation Act projects is a plus.
